June 12: PENGASSAN urges politicians to enhance democratic values

By Thompson ABISOLA

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) on Tuesday urged politicians to improve on the democratic values that emerged from the June 12, 1993 Presidential election.

Public Relations Officer of PENGASSAN, Mr. Fortune Obi, made the appeal while addressing journalists in Lagos. He advised politicians to guide the democratic values rather than heat the polity.

Obi commended President Muhammadu Buhari for recognising and according June 12 its right status in the nation’s history. “The recognition has vindicated the union and its leadership who fought for democracy. Political leaders should address and resolve issues that can threaten democracy,’’ he said.

The PENGASSAN spokesman urged politicians to shun acts that could cause chaos and division in the country, saying that all those involved in the June 12 struggle should be duly recognised.

“We appreciate the recognition of the June 12 as Democracy Day in the country. We, however, noticed that many of those involved in the struggle were left out of the list by the government,’’ Obi said.

He noted that some leaders of PENGASSAN and Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) played key roles and paid the price at that time to actualise the democracy being enjoyed in the country.
