Unionist tasks security agencies on wanton killings

By Aliyu DANLADI

A unionist, Mr Babatunde Olatunji, has appealed to security agencies in the country to find a sustainable way to end the worsening spate of wanton killings in Nigeria.

Olatunji, who is the President of the National Union of Chemical, Footwear, Rubber, Leather and Non-Metallic Products Employees made the appeal at a security forum in Lagos on Thursday.

He suggested that security operatives should forge relationships with communities to gather useful intelligence to end the killings.

The unionist lamented the increasing spate of killings in Plateau, Taraba and Benue States, saying that government must find a way to end the killings to sustain the unity of the country.

“One of the major duties of government is the protection of lives and properties of citizens. We appeal to government to ensure that this is done.

“Our union expresses its condolences to the families of the victims. There is the need for security agencies, especially the police to collaborate with the communities.”

According to him, the collaboration will make the local communities to provide necessary information to nip such attacks in the bud.

He, however, called for an overhaul of the security set up in the country, advising that more people should also be recruited into the security agencies.

Olatunji said government should establish a special squad of military and other forces that would be permanently stationed in trouble areas.
