Sultan tasks scholars on unlawful wedding spending

By Aliyu DANLADI

Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, on Monday called on scholars in the state to initiate steps in curbing what he described as unlawful wedding expenses and other extravagant spending at social ceremonies.

Abubakar made the call during a meeting organised by the Sokoto State Zakkat and Endowment Commission to get more ideas on improving its generation standard.

“Our scholars need to generously inform the people on the effect of unlawful wedding and other ceremonial spending in the society.

“This act generates nothing but confusion and unnecessary divorce which has become the disturbing point of discussion in the society.

“As such, we need to identify all necessary measures to successfully stop such unlawful acts, which are highly prohibited in Islam,” he said.

The traditional ruler also called on the scholars to always fear Allah in their practice, saying such will surely change the attitude of the society.

Similarly, Abubakar tasked wealthy persons to always assist the less privilege among them in order to reduce suffering and hardship among members of the society.

Earlier, the Commission Chairman, Malam Lawal Maidoki commended the scholars for their support and dedication toward ensuring the success of all activities of the commission.

“We have the full confidence that such support and commitment will be sustained by our various scholars, in order to achieve our mandate of supporting the less privilege in the society,” he said.
