Media Ethics: NUJ presidential aspirant advocates improved salary structure, welfare

By Aliyu DANLADI

A presidential aspirant of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Mr Chris Isiguzo, has advocated for improved welfare of media practitioners to address sharp practices.

Isiguzo made the call during a campaign at the Kogi Press Centre Council Secretariat of the NUJ, in Lokoja on Monday. He said a meaningful salary structure with adequate welfare package for members would eradicate unethical practices in the journalism profession.

The aspirant pledged to promote the welfare of members, if given the mandate, saying that his administration would ensure the realisation of a new media salary structure and implementation of weigh-in allowance.

Isiguzo, who is the current NUJ Vice-President, South-East Zone, also promised to take the union to higher heights, if elected.

Earlier, Mr Ali Atabor, the Director-General of the “Rescue Mission Campaign Team’’, described the aspirant as a dependable comrade capable of turning things around for the better.

Atabor, who is the immediate past chairman of Kogi Council of the NUJ, said Isiguzo’s leadership would dwell on five thematic areas for the improvement of the journalism profession in the country.

Also speaking, Mr Wilson Bako, the Vice President, Zone D of the NUJ, drummed support for Isiguzo at the October Delegates’ Conference in Abeokuta.

The state NUJ Chairman, Mr Adeiza Jimoh, called on all aspirants coming to Kogi to campaign with an open mind and exhibit maturity.

Jimoh assured members that the council has not anointed any candidate and would not impose any aspirant.
