Expert calls for more infrastructure for tourism devt.

By Giwa SHILE

An expert in tourism management, Mr Habila Kayit,  has called for more infrastructural development in the country to attract tourists and reposition the sector.

Kayit made the call on Tuesday in Abuja on ways to generate more revenue from the tourism sector.

“Tourists want to have new experiences as such the need for renewed infrastructure and superstructure facilities are important.

“Renewed investment in the areas of infrastructure and superstructures will help reposition the industry,” he said.

He added that these would aid in creating more employment opportunities, increase the Nation’s revenue as well as showcase Nigeria’s culture and lifestyle.

Kayit decried the effects of insecurity on the tourism sector, which he said had negatively effected the economy and discourage tourists from coming into the country.

“Tourism as an economic activity is centered on the people. The industry is product and service oriented which generates income that has widespread economic impact and benefits.

“Tourists and visitors alike are very concerned about their safety and the protection of their belongings.

“Insecurity, no matter how little, has vast negative impact on the industry as nothing is as precious as the life and belonging of the tourist.

“Nigeria as a country has received negative publicity with the activities of Boko Haram and Fulani herdsmen and this has affected the industry greatly,” Kayit added.

He, therefore stressed the need for the government and other stakeholders to play their role in curbing insecurity in order to promote tourism activities.
