ECOWAS, African courts urge enhanced judicial coordination

The ECOWAS Court of Justice and the African Court has called for enhanced coordination among judicial institutes in the region towards the promotion of human rights.

This was part of the discussions at the opening of a two-day judicial dialogue at the ECOWAS Court in Abuja on Monday.

The dialogue was organised for both institutes to exchange ideas, share experiences on issues relating to protection of human rights and the implementation of rules and protocols.

The President of the ECOWAS Court, Justice Edward Asante, said the dialogue would enhance human right in the region due to the objectives of the two organisations.

“The importance of a judicial dialogue cannot be overemphasised, because it affords the judges of different judicial institutions, the opportunity to meet to rub minds and exchange ideas and experiences in respect of their judicial mandate.

“It is therefore imperative, that we continue the judicial dialogue since both courts are engaged in the protection of human rights at the regional and sub-regional levels in Africa, under the framework of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.”

Asante also said the outcome of the dialogue would be beneficial to the courts in the discharge of their judicial functions.

Justice Sylvan Ore, the President of the African Court, said the interaction was important as it would lead to enhanced understanding between both courts and promote human and people’s rights.

Ore added that the jurisdiction of the African Court on Human and People’s rights covers all instruments adopted within the African continent and internationally.

He added that the African Court was involved in the sensitisation of states on the mandate of the court. ==NAN
