Zambia’s sole oil refinery to double production

Zambia’s sole oil refinery said on Thursday that it planned to double its production capacity following ongoing rehabilitation works.

State-run Indeni Oil Refinery said it intends to double its capacity to 2.2 million tons per year once rehabilitation works are completed.

Currently, the oil refinery has a designed production capacity of 1.1 million tons per year.

David Lungu, the firm’s managing director, however, said that the refinery was currently only producing between 600, 000 and 700, 000 tons per year, according to a release.

According to him, the firm has put in place a five-year strategic plan from 2017 to 2021 to expand and rehabilitate the plant, adding that the move to double the capacity will sustain the future of the refinery.

The rehabilitation works of the refinery have reached an advanced stage, he added.
