NEMA receives fresh batch of 168 stranded Nigerians from Libya

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has received fresh batch of 168 distressed and stranded Nigerians from Libya on Friday morning.

Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, NEMA’s Acting Coordinator, Lagos Territorial Office received them on behalf of its Director General, Mustapha Maihajja.

Farinloye noted that the voluntary returnees were assisted back to Nigeria by the IOM with the support of EU in a special intervention.

He said fhe returnees arrived the country aboard Al Buraq airline landed at about 5:42 a.m this morning after 12 hours delayed.

Farinloye said after profiling, the 38 adult females, five female children were brought back while 109 adult males, six male children and 10 infants were amongs the new returnees.

He said: “These has brought the total returnees from Libya to 8,096 males and 5,788 females alone.

“These has brought the total number of returnees brought to Nigeria from 16 countries to 15,731 since April, 2017 till date.

Farinloye said the summary of the special EU-IOM and Federal Government intervention since 2017 till Oct. 2019.

He revealed the followings as Nigerians were brought back as indicated here with Libya having the highest number of Returnees with male 8,096 and female 5,788.

“Niger Republic 1,043 males and 556 females; Morocco males 42, female 37; Liberia eight males and four females; Burkina Faso six males and females 18; France three males and one females

“While Ireland had only one female but countries like poland, Austria, Gambia, Mauritania, Ethiopia had one male each assisted back chad had one male a two females and Cote D’ivoire had only two females brought back within the periods.

“Estimatedly, adults males formed 54 per cent and 37 per cent are for females while male and female minors are 4 per cent each.

Farinloye also said the distressed migrants brought back per state of origin show that Edo State topped the list with 40.6 per cent; Delta 13.3 per cent and Ogun 6.2 per cent.

According to him, Imo 4.7 per cent; Lagos 4.3 per cent; Oyo 4.1 per cent; Yobe 3.6 per cent ; Kano 3.1 per cent and Osun with 2.9 per cent while other states complete the rest.

Farinloye said on the state of their conditions and experience those that suffered various degree torture in males were 31 and females were 21.

The NEMA official said unaccompanied minors that were assisted back in males were 66 and females were 67.

He said those who were kidnapped out of Nigeria but assisted back in males were 79 and females were 31; single parents males 41 and females were 616.

Farinloye said total number of pregnant women brought back so far were 439 while those with various medical issues males 592.

He added that females were 804 and migrants assisted back with psychosocial needs were males 523 and females 470 as the summary of the special intervention exercise.
