Igbinedion university VC urges Petroleum Society to eliminate gas flaring in Nigeria

Prof. Lawrence Ezemonye, Vice Chancellor, Igbinedion University Okada (IUO), on Friday urged the Society of Petroleum Engineers Nigeria Council (SPENC) to focus on eliminating gas flaring in the country.

Ezemonye gave this advice at 2020 Students Technical Symposium and Exhibition (STSE) with the theme: “Exploring Cleaner Oil and Gas Production Technology for a Sustainable Global Energy Industry” in Okada.

According to him, eliminating gas flaring can be done at vertical or horizontal levels.

“The minister of state for petroleum resources says with the expansion of the Train 7 of the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG), gas flare will be reduced.

“So, the theme captures the current trends in exploration and exploitation of oil and gas resources against the backdrop of global focus on effects of climate change awareness.

“Nigeria happens to be one of the 187 countries that ratified the Paris Agreement, a UN backed framework on climate change.

“Following this development, Nigeria on Sept. 22,  2016, issued a statement cutting back on Green House Gas emissions unconditionally by 20 per cent and conditionally by 45 per cent, in line with Nigeria’s nationally determined contributions,” he said.

Ezemonye said that STSE was a great platform which provided students with opportunities to unlock their potential and compete for greatest.

Mr Joseph Nwakwue, the Chairman (SPENC), said the society would work toward eliminating gas flaring in the country.

“SPE is an industry that is sensitive to the environment and intends to leave a sustainable substance for the children,” he said.

In his lecture, Olatunji Akinwunmi, Vice Chairman, SPENC, said that oil and gas production in Nigeria should provide 50 per cent of environmental protection.

“Limiting the effects of oil and gas on the environment is key,” he said.

The 2020 STSE organised by SPENC was to teach and expose engineering students to the constraints of the profession.
