Onyeama Calls For Allocation Of 2% Of Nation’s GDP To Science, Research, Innovation

Geoffrey Onyeama, Minis­ter of Foreign Affairs, has advocated that two per­cent of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) should be allocated to the development of sciences, research and innovation in the country.

 Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Technol­ogy and Innovation EXPO 2021 at the weekend in Abuja, Onyeama said de­veloped countries across the world have made sig­nificant investments in science, technology and innovation.

 It would be recalled that at the opening cere­mony of the event, Presi­dent Muhammadu Buhari represented by Vice Pres­ident Yemi Osinbajo, had pledged to allocate 0.5 per cent of the nation’s GDP to science and innovation.

Onyeama contended that no society can pros­per and grow without sci­ence and innovation, add­ing that Nigeria needs to invest more in research, innovation and provision of enabling environment.
