Nigeria @61: Sen. Tinubu urges building for future generations

Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, (APC-Lagos Central) has advised building a nation that future generations of Nigerians will be proud of.

Tinubu also urged Nigerians to shun all attempts to cause disunity and remain unflinching in spite of challenges.

Tinubu gave the advice in a statement titled: “Undaunted in Challenging Times” on Thursday in Lagos, and in commemoration of Nigeria’s 61st independence anniversary.

The senator also advised Nigerians to safeguard, preserve, cherish and build the nation.

She urged Nigerians to make out time for sober reflections as they celebrated. She added that the people should realise that the things that bound them were stronger than those which threatened to divide them.

“Every year, we commemorate the independence of our nation. Beyond the festivities however, it is a culmination of our struggle for self-determination from imperialism and our resolve to self-rule.

“Upon attainment of Independence, hope, determination and confidence about the future, were resounding themes in the speech delivered by the late Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa.

“It is a reminder of where we have come from, how far we have gone, the price that we paid for this freedom and all that binds us together as a nation.

“It is a reminder to hold on to the hope for better days, and the determination to make Nigeria work. There is no doubt however, that we may have gone off course a few times, and in the words of Sir Tafawa Balewa, ‘tested to the utmost’.

“What matters most is that we have found our way back and are on course to the realisation of the Nigeria of our dreams,” she said.

Tinubu commended Nigerian security operatives for their continued efforts in defending the internal peace and sovereignty of the country, noting that the commemoration of independence was a time to appreciate them.

She said: “Our nationalists have fought and played their part. Now, the responsibility rests on us.

“I congratulate the good people of Lagos Central Senatorial District, Lagos State, and all Nigerians at home and the diaspora, on this 61st anniversary of Nigeria’s Independence.”
