FIRS spent N45.6m on five-day hotel accommodation, say Reps

The House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee has queried the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) over N45.6 million spent on a five-day accommodation of its officials in Transcorp Hilton hotel in 2016.
This was as the Chairman of FIRS, Mohammed Nami, appeared before the committee following a query from the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation.
Chairman of the Committee, Oluwole Oke, said a report by the agency showed N45.6 million was spent on a five-day accommodation in December 2016 with no details about the spending.
He said the agency found that all the payments were for just a room, while zero was recorded for the number of persons that the sum was paid for.
The Committee summoned the management of Transcorp Hilton to appear before it within seven days to give details about the bill.
The Committee also queried FIRS for awarding a contract to a firm, Core Media, despite not meeting up tax clearance at the time of the award.
The Committee wondered why the FIRS awarded the contract to the company in 2017 when records showed it had only cleared its tax up to 2016.
