HURIDE demands sack of EFCC’s boss for non-prosecution of corrupt leaders

The Human Rights Liberty Access and Peace Defenders Foundation (HURIDE) has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to sanction and sack the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) for lack of political will power to prosecute ex-governors and other political leaders who defrauded and enriched themselves with public money.

Making this call in Abuja during a press conference, the group said the recent arrest of the immediate past Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, is one of too many left unresolved as nothing has been done since his arrest as he was trying to escape to United States of America (USA) same day he handed over to his successor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo.

Specifically, the president of HURIDE, Dede Uzor A Uzor, said the EFCC chairman has failed to prosecute Willie Obiano for financial atrocities he committed against Anambrarians during his regime, saying that his only claimed achievement was the building of glorified warehouse called International Airport which are recently shattered by rampaging by a ferocious wind, an International Conference Centre and uncompleted stadium”.

Chief Obiano who took over the mantle of leadership from Mr Peter Obi eight years ago allegedly left the State with over N100 billion debt and a paltry sum of N300 million cash in Anambra State account without infrastructural development such as roads, water, electricity, security, and engagement of the youth.

“The State was battered economically; the local government election was not conducted for the whole of eight years of his administration and local government allocations were siphoned and diverted to private accounts” he alleged.

The group said it was regrettably therefore that EFCC merely paraded yahoo boys with their laptops and refused to parade known criminals like ex-governors who siphoned the patrimony of their state.

“EFCC has devoted much interest in the arrest of yahoo boys, taking over the job of ICPC instead of advance fee fraud and financial crime which they were mandated to prosecute” HURIDE said.

President Buhari, said the group, should appoint a serious-minded person who has the interest of Nigeria at heart and who is ready to step on toes of the rich and corrupt political leaders so as to rescue this nation from economic.
