Lightning detectors for Abuja, Lagos, Benin airports

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) plans to install lightning detection system in 10 airports across the country.

Some of the airports are the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja, Benin Airport and the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

The Director-General, NiMet, Prof Mansur Matazu, broke the news during the handing over of the lightning detection system donated by the Earth network in Abuja on Wednesday.

Matazu, who said NiMet staff members, would also be trained on the use of the equipment, noted NiMet has received 10 AWOS, ten lightning detectors and their required accessories at no commercial value to it.

He said the equipment, which cost Nigeria nothing, was as the outcome of the memorandum of understanding signed between Nigeria and Earth network last year for the provision of the equipment and system.

Matazu said: “As part of the execution of the MoU, the agency has received 10 AWOS, 10 lightning detectors and their required accessories at no commercial value to it.

“The equipment will be installed at NiMet facilities and partner institutions in Nigeria to enhance the quality of the data set required to fulfil the terms of the MoU.’’
