The Federal Government has called for the support of stakeholders on the current review of the weights and measurement Act and its subsidiary legislations.
Mrs Comfort Emenbu, Director, Weights and Measures Department, Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, made the call during a Southwest stakeholders’ engagement on Tuesday in Lagos.
She added that the meeting was necessitated by the need to actualise the implementation of the Nigeria National Quality Policy (NNQP), approved by President Muhammadu Buhari on Jan. 27, 2021.
“It is envisaged that the implementation of the quality policy will bring about the improvement of the quality of products and services which are manufactured or provided respectively in Nigeria,” she said.
She said that current global trends in weights and measures administration necessitate that certain aspects of the existing Act are reviewed to accommodate global best practices in Legal Metrology.
Emenbu said the engagement aimed at providing laws and regulations that would upgrade weights and measures services to be at par with global best practices.
According to her, this will guarantee the quality of products and services made in Nigeria.
Emenbu noted that this would also enhance trust for trade within the country and with Nigeria‘s international business allies.
Emenbu was represented by Okechukwu Ejiofor, Assistant Director, Weights and Measures Department.
Also, Mr Ogheneruemu Okerhe, Assistant Director, Training, Legal Metrology, Weights and Measures Department, said engaging stakeholders was crucial to get robust input on the current regulations being reviewed.
Okerhe said the ministry was currently engaging stakeholders on the fifth and eighth schedule of the Act, which had been an ongoing process with many sectoral bodies within the country.
