The number of Nigerian-trained doctors practising in the United Kingdom has climbed to 11,001, Sunday PUNCH reports.
Between February 2 to March 15, 2023, 162 Nigerian-trained doctors were licensed to practise in the UK.
Our correspondent also observed that 15 doctors were licensed to practise in the UK in three days, from March 16 to March 18, 2023.
The report is according to the register of the General Medical Council of the UK. The GMC is a public body that maintains the official register of medical practitioners within the UK.
Our correspondent, who monitored the GMC website in the last 45 days, observed that the number of Nigerian-trained doctors practising in the UK rose from 10,824 to 11,001.
Healthcare workers in Nigeria are leaving to seek greener pastures due to poor pay, poor working conditions, poor welfare, insecurity, and lack of job satisfaction.
There is the current worry of being able to backfill as physicians retire or move out of the workforce in the country.
Meanwhile, Nigeria needs to produce about 12,000 doctors annually to meet the required number of physicians.
Nigeria ranks third-highest in the number of foreign doctors working in the UK after India (31,997) and Pakistan (18,524).
