Banana Island: One body recovered from collapsed building

The body of an adult male has been recovered from the rubble of the collapsed building on First Avenue, Banana Island, Ikoyi, Lagos State.

The seven-storey building, which was under construction, collapsed on Wednesday, leaving many workers trapped.

Although no fewer than 25 people were rescued from the collapsed structure, City Round gathered that emergency responders, who stormed the scene for the rescue operation, continued with the search.

However, the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotoso, in a statement on Friday, disclosed that the body of the male victim was found on Friday morning, almost 48 hours after the incident.

Omotoso said, “The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency search and recovery efforts unearthed the remains of the adult male hitherto unaccounted for by site supervisors.

“The excavation of the site, using architectural designs, continues. The site has been divided into quadrants for a painstaking search and rescue operation. Quadrants two and three have been levelled to ground zero, with the search operation completed. Quadrant four is ongoing.

“Nobody could ascertain whether the victim, whose body was found this morning, was on the site – as of the time the roll call was taken.”
