FCTA earns N1.7bn from building approvals, demolishes 11,705 shanties

The Department of Development Control of the Federal Capital Territory Administration says it demolished a total of 11,705 shanties across the territory between January and October 2023.
The department also said it generated N1.7bn from building plans approvals, adding that it created 13,873 direct and indirect jobs, within the same period.
The director of the department, Mukhtar Galadima, stated this on Sunday in Abuja, while briefing pressmen on the activities of the department.
Galadima explained that areas affected by the shanties’ demolition included Kabusa, Kasuwan Dare, Galadimawa Junction, Mabushi Scavenger Colony, and Gudu District along Oladipo Diya Way.
He said the department also removed obstructing structures on waterways at Lugbe, Jahi, and Lokogoma, noting that the actions had helped to curtail floods experienced within the city in recent years.
The director also said that a total of 1,764 building plan applications were received in the time period, of which 1,422 have been granted, including previous backlogs.
Galadima further said that the N2.5bn generated revenue were monies from building plan approvals and land use contraventions from January to October, adding that the amount represented 68.5 per cent of the department’s targeted N3.7bn.
