A tragic incident occurred in Benin City, Edo State on Friday when a wheelbarrow pusher stabbed a tax collector to death over a dispute over N50 and then took his own life.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred on Mission Road in the Oredo Local Government Area of the state.
An argument ensued between the wheelbarrow pusher and the tax collector over the collection of N50 daily tickets.
The argument escalated, and the wheelbarrow pusher pulled out a knife and stabbed the tax collector to death. Realising the gravity of his actions, the wheelbarrow pusher then stabbed himself in the neck and died.
The incident caused panic and commotion in the area, with shop owners hurriedly closing their shops and residents fleeing the scene.
Police and other security personnel arrived at the scene and cordoned off the area. The bodies of the wheelbarrow pusher and the tax collector were taken to the morgue.
The incident has sparked a debate about the role of tax collectors in Nigeria. Some people argue that tax collectors are often aggressive and demanding, while others believe that they are essential for the government to collect revenue.
The police have launched an investigation into the incident and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
