Reps threaten to withhold FCT area councils’ budget over snub

The House of Representatives has threatened to withhold the annual budgetary allocation of the six Federal Capital Territory Area Councils for failing to honour invitations extended to them by the House relevant standing Committees.

The resolution followed the refusal of the Chairmen of Area Councils to appear before the joint House Committees on FCT Area Councils and Ancillary Matters met on Tuesday at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja

Consequently, the lawmakers summoned the FCT Minister of State, Mariya Mahmud and the Chairmen of the six FCT Area Councils to appear before the joint Committees on Tuesday, July 16, 2024.

In his contribution, Peter Uzokwe described the non-appearance of the council chairmen as disrespectful.

The Chairman of the House Committee on FCT Area Councils and Ancillary Matters, Frederick Agbedi, on his part, said their failure to appear was unacceptable.

While noting that a new date will be communicated to the FCT Council Chairmen, the Committee dissolved into an executive session.
