Two soldiers have been confirmed dead while repelling coordinated Boko Haram/ISWAP attacks in the New Marte and Kumshe areas of Borno State.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, Headquarters Theatre Command of Operation Hadin Kai, Capt. Reuben Kovangiya, many insurgents were neutralised during the confrontations.
Kovangiya said, “In the early hours of May 27, 2025, troops of Operation Hadin Kai foiled an attack by Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists attempting to infiltrate their position in New Marte, Borno State.
“The terrorists were met with heavy gunfire, and the air component provided immediate Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance as well as offensive fire support, leading to the decimation of several fleeing insurgents.”
The combined effort of ground forces and the air component successfully repelled the assault.
In a related incident, troops also thwarted a daring attack on the Forward Operating Base at Kumshe.
“Regrettably, two soldiers paid the ultimate sacrifice during the encounters,” the statement confirmed. “The collaborative effort demonstrates the renewed jointness and team spirit in the fight against terrorism, geared towards bringing lasting peace to enable socio-economic activities to thrive in the North-East region.”
During post-operation exploitation, troops recovered one Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Device SUV abandoned by the terrorists and destroyed several motorcycles used for transport by the insurgents.
The discovery of lifeless insurgent bodies and blood trails along their withdrawal routes indicated additional casualties inflicted on the terrorists.
Kovangiya further emphasised the enhanced coordination between ground forces and the Air Component as crucial to the success of these operations.
Reinforcements from the 24 Task Force Brigade Garrison and the 134 Special Forces Battalion were swiftly mobilised to repel the attacks.
He reiterated the troops’ determination to sustain the momentum against terrorism, in line with the mandate of Operation Hdin Kai, reaffirming the commitment to denying terrorists freedom of movement and restoring peace to the North-East.
