Airlines divert, cancel flights over poor weather

Most flights from Lagos to many northern states were delayed, diverted or cancelled on Saturday morning as a result of low visibility caused by poor weather conditions.
Harmattan haze staged an unexpected return to states in the southern part of the country on Wednesday with reduced visibility even for motorists. The same scenario also prevails in the North.
Air Peace was forced to divert its Lagos-Kano and Lagos-Ilorin flights, while others had to make air returns to Lagos. Other airlines operating northern routes also delayed and cancelled their flights.
Air Peace had on Saturday morning issued a circular in which it alerted passengers to flight delays due to bad weather. The circular read, “The weather in some of our destinations is below operating minimum and has inevitably created delays across our network today.
“The poor visibility also led to the diversion of Lagos-Kano and Lagos-Ilorin flights this morning.
“While the weather is beyond our control, we regret the inconveniences caused by these disruptions as we work hard to minimise the impact on our operations.”
The airline, via its official Instagram handle, apologised to the affected passengers, adding that the weather was not under its control.
A source at Air Peace said in the last few days, the airline had to delay flights to the North as a result of low visibility.
Also, the Chief Commercial Officer of indigenous airline, Green Africa, Obiukwu Mbanuzuo, said, “My airline has not been able to operate into Ilorin, Akure and Benin for the past two days. Hundreds of passengers are stranded. Crews are in the wrong places and going out of hours.
“When will our airports have the necessary landing aids?”
