Lagos PHC Board, Kosofe LG, commemorate International Youth Day

 

The Lagos State Primary Health Care Board (LSPHCB) and Kosofe Local Government Area in Lagos, celebrated the International Youth Day.

The commemoration was also done in collaboration with other groups like Mercy Corps, Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN), The Challenge Initiative, and DISC, YPE4AH and community heads.

Speaking at the event, Dr Ibrahim Mustapha, Permanent Secretary, LSPHCB, described the theme of event, “Good Health and Well Being for Youth: Essential for Green Skill Achievement,” was apt and timely.

Mustapha said that they were looking beyond some of the things that were very important and already making the world less green than it should be.

He said that every now and then, people talked about climate change, global warming with its extreme temperature here and there, deforestation, and all of that.

The Permanent Secretary said that the world was moving towards a catastrophe if people did not desist from activities that were negatively impacting on the global environment.

He stressed that some people did not believe in global warming, and urged them to have a change of attitude, and be abreast with the necessary information.

Mustapha said the change must begin with the youths, adding that the youth needed to be equipped with necessary life sustaining tools that would impact directly on their health and make live in a world that is green.

Speaking earlier, Dr. Dayo Lajide, Permanent Secretary, Primary Healthcare District 2, said that the programme was remarkable in the sense that it was talking about health issues of youths.

Lajide said that the program was using the power of sports, particularly football, to ignite, inspire, and engage the youths.

She said that the program would enable the youth to cultivate healthy habits and understand health issues better.

Lajide said that the program would be looking at family planning, extra hygiene, sexual transmitted diseases, unwanted pregnancy and mental health, among others.

The program featured health talks from experts on prevention of Sexually Transmitted Infections, unwanted pregnancy, substance abuse and mental health.

It also featured talks on puberty changes, menstrual hygiene, the importance of taking charge of one’s sexual health and life planning as a young person.

The high point of the event was a football match between boys and girls in the community aimed at fostering team spirit and healthy competition.
