The Corps Commander, Ogun Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) Mr Seni Ogunyemi, has called for the installation of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras on major highways in the state to monitor road accidents.
Ogunyemi said this on Tuesday in Abeokuta while playing host to executive members of the Online Media Practitioners Association of Nigeria (OMPAN), Ogun Chapter in his office.
Ogunyemi, who was represented by the Deputy Corps Commander, Shola Bamidele, called for concerted efforts to minimise high rate of crashes in Ogun.
He said such efforts would reduce rate of casualties and rate of deaths resulting from road traffic crashes within the state.
He added that a lot of facilities and equipment were needed to effectively boost the activities of the TRACE across the state.
He called on individuals and corporate organisations to assist the agency with modern equipment to aid its operations.
He urged journalists to be objective, truthful and responsible in their news reports, saying that the reports had a lot to do with the continuous peace and progress of the nation.
He said inaccurate accident reports on social media had unsettled many Nigerians and caused confusion in the country.
He said that misrepresentation of such facts had created fear and panic among road users and members of the public.
He called for synergy between the traffic agency and online journalists on adequate alert of road crashes which he said would save many victims.
“Your coming is very timely because we have considered online media practitioners association faceless group of people who hide under the use of social media.
“Your association should put in place control mechanism to checkmate the quackery in the profession,” he said.
