Lagos residents recount losses, disappointment over postponement of polls

By Abisola THOMPSON

Residents in Ago Okota area, Lagos, on Saturday expressed disappointment over the postponement of the general elections.

TBI Africa said they told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the postponement was unexpected and had disrupted their activities for the day.

The Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, on Saturday announced the postponement of the exercise.

He said  Presidential and National Assembly elections had been postponed to Feb. 23, while Governorship and State House of Assembly elections would hold on March 9.

Mr Ikemuefuna Osita, a prospective voter, Ward F3 Polling Unit, Ali Dada, Ago, described the postponement as “unfortunate”.

Osita said that information on the postponement came very late.

“Since INEC knows it was not prepared for the exercise, it should have concealed it earlier; Also, many people have traveled to their villages  for the polls.”

Mr Godwin Adeyinka, another prospective Voter at Ward F2 Avenue, said the postponement had affected INEC’s credibility  as many had lost confidence on the commission to conduct free and fair polls.

He said the commission must convince the electorate of it preparedness to conduct credible poll on Saturday.

Mrs Grace Olomola, a trader, said that she would not be able to make enough sales because of the postponement, adding that roads were deserted and very few people were out.

“For over an hour since I opened my shop, nobody buy anything from me,” she said.
