FG spent N2tn on police in five years, group alleges

A civil rights organisation, the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law, has alleged that about N2tn ($6.5bn) has been spent by the government on the police since 2015.

The organisation also said that apart from receiving the amount, the Force had been receiving monthly and annual supportive equipment and cash logistics, including operational vehicles and cash donations from governors of the 36 states and other influential private citizens.

The Board Chair of INTERSOCIETY, Emeka Umeagbalasi, said he relied on available official records.

Umeagbalasi said, “Apart from failing woefully in manning the country’s internal security in the past five years, over $6.5bn or N2tn drawn mostly from borrowed public funds and a fraction from non-debt sources has been spent on the NPF and its past and serving personnel in the past five years.

“Already, another whopping sum of N447.6bn has been earmarked for the Force in 2021; yet, the country is still bedevilled by failed and mercantile policing.”
