The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), Kwara chapter, says it has trained the final year students of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, on Career Fair.
Its Chief Human Resources Officer, Ms Eli Obaseki, made this known on Thursday in Ilorin, while training the students on how to survive in their careers after leaving school.
Obaseki, represented by the state Acting Regional Manager, Mr Christopher Lawal, said that theme of the programme was: “DisCo for Women”.
He explained that the opening of the DisCo for Women Career Fair is a platform that provides a unique opportunity for learning, engagement and networking.
According to her, DisCo is an acronym for Discussing Issues Surrounding Career Opportunities.
“Entering work of life after completed studies is a two-way process.
“As students, they need to make themselves attractive to employers and employers also must make an equal effort to attract the best students.
“With this career fair, we needed to be brave and chart a course no one has ever taken before; it is first of its kind undertaken by a corporate body in Nigeria.
“We have decided to integrate backwards, before the application stage of the recruitment process and proactively engage women in order to remove any conscious and unconscious bias of seeing positions as a “Man’s job.
“There is no shortcut to success, and there is no success without sacrifice.
“Therefore, as students, it is of utmost importance that you carefully consider the value propositions of prospective employers in view of career growth and aspirations,” Obaseki said.
In her remarks, Mrs Angela Olanrewaju, the Head, Branding and Corporate Communication, said that career fair is a training that would prepare the students for the labour market.
Olanrewaju added that after the training the students would possess the quality that will make the employers to recognise them as employees to be.
According to her, this is part of IBEDC’s Social Responsibility to Nigerians.
“The programme is mostly for ladies, because of this coinage man’s world; so, we want to ensure that women have their platform to be able to equally excel to pick up their careers.
“With career fair training, their eyes will open to see that even, a better life after the education, so that they will be well equipped with the necessary requirement advance in the work life,” Olarewaju said.
