Sokoto lawmakers decry poor electricity to consumers

The Sokoto State House of Assembly on Wednesday decried what it described as `unfair treatment’ of electricity consumers in the state.

This followed a motion on Matter of Urgent Public Importance by Alhaji Malami Galadanchi (APC- Sokoto North I) and seconded by Alhaji Ibrahim Gidado (APC- Sokoto South I).

Galadanchi said that the motion was to defend the interest of electricity consumers in the state.

“People of Sokoto state are not happy with the way Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) is treating consumers in the state in terms of electricity supply.

“KEDCO is responsible for the supply of electricity to four states of Kaduna, Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara.

“But, currently among the states, only Sokoto is experiencing epileptic power supply with three to four hours supply on daily basis,” he said.

Galadanchi added that another disturbing scenario was that in spite of the poor power supply, KEDCO had continued with its normal charges on the people.

“I can say without any fear of contradiction that KEDCO is generating revenue in Sokoto far above what it is collecting in Kebbi and Zamfara states, yet we continue to remain in darkness,” he said.

He appealed to the Assembly to call KEDCO to stop the unfair treatment in the supply of electricity in the state.

The Deputy Speaker, Alhaji Abubakar Magaji, who presided at the plenary, said that the motion was adopted as the lawmakers unanimously voted in its favour.

The assembly immediately constituted a seven-member special committee to investigate the matter and report back in one week for further action.
