Commission mobilises stakeholders for peaceful 2019 elections

By Giwa SHILE

Chairman, Kaduna State Peace Commission, Rev. Josiah Idowu-Fearon, has begun mobilising relevant stakeholders towards peaceful 2019 general elections in the state.

Idowu-Fearon told journalists on Sunday in Kaduna that the step was necessary to ensure crisis-free elections in the state.

“As preparations for 2019 general elections are in high gear, we want political parties, politicians as well as the electorate to be active agents of peace.

“We are engaging the media, political parties, community and religious leaders and all relevant stakeholders so we will all be on the same page to ensue peaceful election in Kaduna State.

“We will also engage youths and women groups in our discourse to facilitate lasting peace in Kaduna State,” Idowu-Fearon said.

He urged the residents of the state to avoid conducts that could threaten the peace and security of the state.

The chairman said the commission, since inauguration six months ago, had initiated robust engagements with diverse stakeholders to ensure it achieves its objective.

He also said the commission had prevented the escalation of communal disputes and conflicts in Kajuru, Jama’a and Kauru, Igabi, and Chikun Local Government Areas.

“We will continue to key in, strengthen, collaborate and work with existing institutions and organisations to achieve maximum result in the peace building process,” he said.

Idowu-Fearon said the commission developed a strategic plan to guide its activities in the state for the next five years.

He explained that the strategy would enable the commission to embark on wide consultations and engage all segments of society to get meaningful inputs that would support peace building in the state.

“We are, therefore, appealing to the good people of the state to avail us with their wisdom, knowledge and foresight to enable us to succeed in this task.

“Our doors are open to those who want to provide us with relevant information relating to matters of peace and security in the state,” he said.

Idowu-Fearon also said the commission, in collaboration with relevant agencies, would develop a curriculum on peace education from the primary school level.

According to him, the idea is to build good citizens that would grow to become peace ambassadors and promote peace.

TBI Africa reports that the commission was established six months ago to curb the frequent and avoidable conflicts bedeviling the state.

Its mandate is to work with people of the state and other nationals as well as international stakeholders to promote and sustain peaceful and harmonious coexistence in the state.
