Belgian Cemetery joins trend for online funerals

By Aliyu DANALDI

A Belgian Cemetery will make funeral services available to follow online via live-stream later this month, joining a growing global trend, the Belga News Agency reported on Tuesday.

The cemetery of Mechelen, 20 kilometres north of Brussels, would be equipped with web cameras and live-streaming technology as part of a refurbishment during the course of September.

This will allow family and friends who are unable to attend in person to pay their final respects.

The installation of the system will cost Mechelen close to 15,260 dollars, Belga reported.

Live-streaming is increasingly being offered as a service at funerals for grieving relatives who are unable to attend.

However, many people would prefer to miss the funeral entirely rather than tune in via web-stream, according to a British survey in 2017 by the Royal London mutual life, pensions and Investment Company.
