Residents of Durumi 2, Gudu District, Abuja, had decried illegal disconnection of electricity supply in the area by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC).
The residents said on Thursday that the area had been without electricity for four days due to the power outage.
They said that they were disconnected without any explanation by officials of the AEDC.
Mr Aminu Mohammad, who spoke, said that people in the area usually pay their bills promptly to avoid disconnection.
Another resident, Mrs Nonye Chibuzor, urged the AEDC to “give listening ears to the cry of the residents. “
She said that since many of the houses in the area have no meter, AEDC “should calculate the meter attached to the transformer and share the bills accordingly.’’
Mrs Peace Zamani, urged the AEDC to supply people in the area with meters.
“We are tired of AEDC coming to disconnect our light, often up to four days and at the end they do not even apologise for their actions.
“We need meters. We will continue to fight for our right so long as we pay our electricity bills,’’ she said.
Mr Eboh Desmond, the Area Manager, AEDC, Gudu District, Apo, who responded to the complainants, explained that initially calculations were done without measuring instruments, like the transformer meter, thereby issuing bills to customers randomly.
Desmond pointed out that the community does not meet up with the monthly bill issued by AEDC, necessitating disconnection from time to time.
He stressed the need for both parties to sit down and discuss how to resolve the issue.
“Initially we were doing this business without a measuring instrument when there was no meter attached to the transformer.
“We need to put a meter for everybody, so that at the end of the day the consumer will pay, but there is no money to give everybody a meter at the same time,’’ he said.
