NCDC, partners working to raise awareness on misuse of antibiotics

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and it’s partners are working together to raise awareness on the misuse of antibiotics in Nigeria.

This was announced in a statement by Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, Chief Executive Officer, NCDC, on Sunday in Abuja.

Ihekweazu said that globally, antibiotics were widely used for the treatment of infections in human and animals.

He, however, said there rising public health concerns over the unnecessary use of antibiotics in human and animals, and increase in antimicrobial resistance.

He also said that the emergence of multidrug-resistant organisms had led to increased mortality and economic burden.

”More than ever, there is a strong need for stakeholders to work together to advocate for the proper procurement and responsible use of antimicrobials,” he said.

He, therefore, said as part of global commemoration, NCDC and partners were inviting Nigerians to participate in the National Antibiotics Awareness Week (NAAW) from the 12th to 18th of November, 2018.

He said the theme for the NAAW would be: Misuse of antibiotics puts us all at risk.
