The Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP) has emphasised the need for robust interface with oil multinationals before the commencement of oil production in Ogoni land.
Its president, Legborsi Pyagbara, told newsmen in Port Harcourt on Wednesday that any deal granting the re-entry of oil producing firms into Ogoni land must be well spelt out.
Pyagbara said such robust interface would aggregate the views and sentiments of all stakeholders in the Ogoni project.
“We must be sure of what the terms are, we must be sure of what the people of Ogoni will stand to get from such activity.
“We have passed the stage where resources deposited in our land and waters will not be used to better our living conditions,” he said.
The MOSOP president said the people of Ogoni were peace-loving and would continue to deploy best international practices in their engagements and agitations.
He called on Ogoni youths not to indulge in violence and criminality, saying, “We should embrace peace in all we do, our land needs peace to progress.”
According to him, as youths, our role is strategic in actualising the dreams of the founding fathers of the Ogoni struggle.
“We must always be in alliance with this dream,” he said.
Shell stopped oil and gas production in Ogoni land since 1993 following MOSOP’s campaign for greater control over petroleum resources in the land.
