Finnair named safest airline worldwide for 2018

By Elizabeth ADENUGA

Finland’s flagship airline — Finnair — had the world’s best safety record in 2018, according to a new ranking, narrowly beating Singapore’s Scoot Tigerair and Norwegian Air Shuttle.

Finnair, Finland’s national airline does not get as much attention in the media as some of its Scandinavian counterparts.

It has one of the best safety records in the business and has not suffered any major accidents since the 1960s.

The German-based Jet Airliner Crash Data Evaluation Centre (JACDEC) gave Finnair a risk index of 93.91 per cent in its annual ranking, published on Thursday.

JACDEC evaluates the safety records of the 100 flight operators with the most air traffic worldwide.

While 2017’s winner, Emirates, slipped down to fourth place in 2018.

The organisation looked at the accident history of an airline, as well as the country-specific operating conditions and specific risk factors.

In last place was Garuda Indonesia with 53.11 per cent.

Air travel is one of the safest forms of transportation around.

However, some airlines are still better at it than others, that is why AirlineRatings.com releases an annual list of the 20 safest carriers in the world.
