Security expert urges new IGP to tighten security ahead 2019 general elections

A security expert, Mr Mohammed Suleiman, has urged the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to intensify efforts toward providing adequate security for the success of 2019 general elections.

Suleiman, a retired Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), gave the advice on Wednesday in Abuja.

He also called on the acting Police boss to adopt sustainable method of community policing to tackle human rights abuse, kidnapping, cattle rustling, banditry and pipeline vandalism.

“The IGP came at a time Nigerians are preparing to go into the general elections,this is one of the most challenging times in this job.

“So, I will advise him to be proactive by providing adequate security throughout the election period,’’ he said.

He said Nigerians would expect to see the ability of the new police boss in addressing the spread of kidnapping and banditry, especially in the north.

Suleiman also advised the acting police boss to apply expertise and merit as criteria in appointing his management team.

Adamu, was born on Sept. 17, 1961 in Lafia, Nasarawa State.

Adamu started his primary education in 1968 at Dunama Primary School, Lafia and completed in 1974.

He proceeded to Government Secondary School Obi, Nasarawa State in 1975 and obtained his West Africa School Certificate (WASC) in 1979.

The acting police boss attended School of Basic Studies at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria for a pre-degree programme.

Adamu got admission into the same university in 1980 and he graduated with Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Geography in 1983.

After completing his tertiary education, he did his compulsory one-year national service at the Government Teachers College, Wamba in Nasarawa State.

He served in the Interpol Headquarters in Lyon, France, as a specialised officer in Economic and Financial Crime directorate.

Adamu rose to become the first African to be the Assistant Director in the Interpol and later, the Vice-President of the organisation.
