The Electricity Workers Union and Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) on Tuesday signed a new condition of service for workers with an understanding to improve performance and grow the organisation.
The condition of service agreement was among EKEDC, National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) and Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC) in Lagos.
TBI Africa said the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the union and management started dialoguing on the agreement from 2014.
It would be recalled that the sector was privatised in November 2013 and only EKEDC has signed a condition of service for workers.
Also, Mr Joe Ajaero, the General Secretary, National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), said that the agreement was long overdue as there would not be performance without incentives.
Ajaero advised EKEDC management not to pay attention to the machines alone, but equally motivate workers to develop the organisation.
“There is a written code now; it marks the beginning of the job to handle all the issues for things to work well,’’ he said.
Also, Mr Adeoye Fadeyibi, Chief Executive Officer, EKEDC, assured electricity consumers within the network of safety and reliable power supply.
Fadeyibi commended the unions’ support toward ensuring good outcome for workers’ conditions of service in the Disco without rancour.
He said that the official signing of the documents was a great success to the company and power sector in general.
EKEDC chief executive officer also urged workers to ensure effective services delivery to consumers.
“Today marks another turning point in the company; it is a good day because the issue had lingered for years now.
“I am celebrating today because both the management and the unions are agreeing on mutual understanding for the betterment of the company and workers,’’ he said.
The managing director said the agreement would foster better understanding and mutual working relationship between the workers and management.
Also, Mr Adetunji Adeniran, the Deputy President of SSAEAC, appealed to the management to forgive workers who had committed any offence before the agreement.
Adeniran said that it was good to maintain harmonious relationship as it took some years to reach the agreement without picketing the organisation.
