A Chinese national has died of his injuries sustained in an explosion at Wassa-Akropong in the Western North region of Ghana, police said on Wednesday.
Two others who sustained serious life-threatening injuries are receiving treatment at the Wassa-Akropong Government Hospital.
The injured have been named as Liung Xan Xen, 52 and Li Fa Ning 43. The deceased is yet to be identified.
The three were in a rented apartment when the incident happened at about 10.30am Wednesday.
Elder George Cobbinah, a witness and a co-tenant told Daily Mail Gh’s Western North regional correspondent that the three were welding a machine with an LPG cylinder.
A huge explosion was heard in the process killing the deceased instantly.
The building, according to Elder Cobbinah was also badly damaged in the process.
Police at Wassa-Akropong have begun investigations into the matter.
Meanwhile, the body of the yet-to-be identified victim has since been deposited at the morgue for autopsy.
Growing numbers of Chinese are in the West African country, which recently gained the title as Africa’s biggest gold producer, since the price of gold soared at the start of the global financial crisis.
Many of them have been engaging in illegal mining and sale of the commodity. Security forces have made significant number of arrests as part of renewed clampdown against illegal mining.
