Ports and Cargo Handling Services Ltd., the flagship company of SIFAX Group, on Monday commissioned new equipment worth more than 20 million dollars to boost its service delivery at the port.
Mr. Adekunle Oyinloye, Group Managing Director, SIFAX Group, disclosed this at the Ports and Cargo Handling Services Ltd. equipment commissioning in Lagos.
Oyinloye said in his address of welcome that the equipment being commissioned were five shore cranes, nine reach stackers, ten terminal tractors, five Nissan pickup among others.
He said that the new equipment were purchased to show Ports and Cargo’s commitment to business.
“The new equipment is to show that we mean business at the port and these new equipment will ensure the renewal of our concession.
“We are also praying that the obstruction caused by the gridlock on the road will be minimised so that efficiency will take place at the port and will lead to a good turnaround time at the port,’’’ he said.
Mr John Jenkins, Managing Director, Ports and Cargo Handling Services Ltd., said that hard work and excellent management system had given room to the purchase of the equipment.
According to him, there are spare parts in the warehouse to ensure the equipment run smoothly.
Mr Norman Herzberg, Sales Manager, Liebherr West Africa, said that the aim of purchasing the equipment was to enhance capacity and productivity.
“These equipment, especially the crane, are for high capacity and speed in movement and it will help the operations of the organisation.
“We are successful when our customers are successful and so these equipment will help Ports and Cargo maintain its ongoing successful performance in the future,’’ he said.
Ms Hadiza Bala-Usman, Managing Director, Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA), said that such equipment would add value to ports operations.
Bala-Usman, represented by Mrs Aisha Ibrahim, General Manager, Marine and Operations, NPA, urged ports and cargo to put the new equipment to effective use to achieve the best in the port.
Mr Adewale Adeyanju, President, Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) said that the equipment would bring a new dawn in the life of workers at the terminals.
According to him, they will continue to support good terminal operators that perform efficiently in the ports.
“We will like the terminal to continue in the next thirty years, and while performing, they should remember those that are doing the work for them, the port workers,’’ Adeyanju said.
