COVID-19: Ibadan residents commend DSTV for home studies channel

Some residents of Ibadan on Friday commended DSTV for the mindset pop up channel dedicated to keeping children abreast of their studies during the stay at home order imposed over COVID-19 epidemic.

The parents, in separate interviews, said in Ibadan that the children could now be kept busy with school work aside fromcartoon channels.

The channel covers all primary school programmes with focus on grades four to nine curriculum.

Some of the subjects being taught are literacy, numeracy skills, mathematics, natural sciences, english, life orientation, arts and physical education activities.

The channel also made provisions for worksheet and information sheets for home tutoring.

Mrs Mobola Adebayo, an Ibadan resident, said that the channel cuts across all subjects, thus keeping the children engrossed in learning.

Adebayo also said that the channel was keeping them away from cartoon.

“Watching cartoon is no more a priority but secondary for the learning channel. They know cartoon is now allowed after learning a few new things daily.

“This channel is indeed helpful in this era of lockdown due to the COVID-19. It’s keeping their memories fresh from what they have been taught earlier.

“You know children tend to forget things easily when it’s not constantly in their faces and this channel will keep refreshing their memories,” he said.

Another resident, Mr Oludayo Alonge,  said that the channel came into existence just at the right time.

Alonge said that before the channel came about, he was teaching his three children using their books as guide.

“Now the three of them have their time to study via the television. Their mother is now involved as we take turns to supervise them when being taught  on television.

“DSTV really did well with this, the teaching programme is a well-detailed one and the teachers are doing a good job. I like the fact that they are teaching them almost everything,” he said.

Also, Mrs Omolola Onanuga, said that cartoon channels were not banned in the house.

Onanuga said that the learning channel was the only channel her children were now entitled to.

“We had a meeting with the children and we agreed that once they resume back in school they will switch back to cartoon channels.

“We made them understand that they still have to keep learning even though they are not in school.

“They also observe all breaks they do in school and enjoy all the meals and snacks they normally take to school so as not to make it boring for them.

“This channel is the best thing happening right now for both parents and their children. It’s helping to keep them busy and striking a balance between their schooling and play,” she said.
