Falana seeks release of El-Zakzaky, wife

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr Femi Falana, has asked for the release of the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky and his wife, Zeenat, from the Kaduna Correctional Servic facility.

Falana, who is the lead counsel for the IMN (Shi’ites), said this became imperative because of the global trend that mandated the decongestion of correctional centres as result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A letter from Falana to the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Kaduna State, Aisha Dikko, also said the Shi’ite leader and his wife were still grappling with life threatening injuries.

In the letter dated April 14, 2020, the Senior Advocate of Nigeria stated that a series of tests conducted on El-Zakzkaky and his wife revealed that there were still bullet shrapnel lodged in several parts of their body.

Against this background, the rights lawyer stated his clients were in dire need of medical attention which could not be attended to in any of the Nigerian Correctional Service facilities.

Falana, therefore, urged the Attorney General to secure the immediate  release of the Shi’ite leader and his wife to enable them access the required medical care.

“On February 24, 2020, the trial court reiterated its order mandating the doctors of the Kaduna State Government, the prison authorities and the personal physicians of our clients to provide dire medical attention to our clients,” he said. The Punch
