Nigeria records 276 new coronavirus cases, total now 8344

Nigeria Centre for Disease Control on Tuesday said 276 new cases of the novel coronavirus have been recorded across the country.

NCDC said Lagos reported 161 of the new cases. According to the NCDC report, Rivers recorded 36 new cases, Edo recorded 27, Kaduna got 19, Nasarawa had 10, and Oyo recorded six new cases.

There were also four new cases found in Kano, three each in Delta and Ebonyi, two in Gombe and one each in Ogun, Ondo, Borno, Abia, and Bauchi.

The number of discharged cases rose from 2,311 on Monday to 2,385. However, 16 more deaths were recorded, taking the nation’s toll to 249.

A total of 8344 cases have now been recorded in 34 states and the FCT.

The number of recoveries is now 2385, while Nigeria has recorded 249 deaths.

While less than 100 fatalities were recorded in the past two weeks, the number of recoveries increased significantly.

As of May 11, a total of 902 patients had been discharged, while 152 deaths had occurred, but by May 18, recoveries had increased to 1,644, with 191 deaths recorded.

The numbers are expected to rise as the NCDC increases testing capacity, but according to Osagie Ehanire, minister of health, nine out of ten patients will recover from COVID-19.

The Ogun State government has assured workers in the state that it would deliver for them 150 units of houses at the Prince Court Estate, Kemta Idi-Aba, Abeokuta at discounted rates.

The government said the 150 units of houses would be delivered in the first phase of the 250-unit housing project.

This was disclosed in a statement posted on Tuesday on the official facebook page of the governor, Dapo Abiodun.

According to the statement, the two key objectives of the project are to provide affordable housing and improve workers’ welfare.

The statement also said the project was nearing completion, but it did not disclose the level of completion at the moment.

“In the 1st Phase of the Project, we will be delivering 150 units at discounted rates to State workers.

“Filling the deficit in affordable housing and improving workers’ welfare are two key objectives of this Project,” it said.

The Anambra State Police Command, Tuesday, arrested a criminal syndicate that specialized in snatching tricycles around Oba in Idemili South Local Government Area of the state.

A release by the state police public relations officer, SP Haruna Mohammed, made available to THE WHISTLER in Awka, stated that the two suspects were arrested after they snatched a tricycle from a victim after pouring a pepperish substance in his face.

According to SP Mohammed, “On the 26/5/2020, around 7:55am, at Umuogali Oba, along Onitsha/Owerri road, two suspected members of a tricycle snatching syndicate who specializes in snatching tricycles, popularly called KEKE, were arrested by a police patrol team attached to Oba Division in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State. The suspects, namely Ikenna Ibemesi, “m” aged 28 years old, of Ogbunike town, and Chukwu Offorbuike, ‘m’, aged 35 years old, of Nkwere Ogidi, allegedly poured a pepperish substance on the face of the tricycle rider, one Joseph Asogwa, ‘m’ of No.31, Iro-Okoye Street, Obosi, and snatched his tricycle with Reg. No NKK 744 QY.”

The report said the victim quickly raised an alarm which attracted the attention of a police patrol team which quickly responded and arrested the suspects, adding that, “The snatched tricycle was also recovered in their possession and registered as an exhibit. The case is under investigation after which suspects would be brought to justice.”

The police spokesman said the state commissioner of police, CP John B. Abang, had cautioned keke/motorcycle riders in the state to be wary of such syndicates, especially at early or late hours of the day in order not to fall victims to them.
