N’Assembly commission queries clerk for insubordination

The National Assembly Service Commission has queried the Clerk to the National Assembly, Mohammed Sani-Omolori, for insubordination.

The Executive Chairman of NASC, Ahmed Amshi, issued the query to Sani-Omolori on Thursday.

Amshi, in the query, referred to a statement issued by the clerk to dismiss the earlier one written by the commission to announce his retirement from service.

Part of the query read, “As you are very much aware, the clerk to the National Assembly is an employee of the National Assembly Service Commission, vide Section 6(1)(b) of the National Assembly Service Act, 2014 (As amended).

“The clerk to the National Assembly has no authority whatsoever to dictate anything to the commission. Your press release is considered by the commission as a gross insubordination to a constituted authority.

“You are, by this letter, requested to explain to the commission within 24 hours as to why disciplinary action will not be taken against you as per the provision of Section 6(2)(b) of the National Assembly Service Act, 2014 (as amended) for this gross insubordination.”

When contacted by journalists on the telephone on Thursday, Sani-Omolori acknowledged receipt of the query and said he would respond to it “accordingly.”

Another round of crisis had begun over the retirement of the clerk to the National Assembly, Mohammed Sani-Omolori, and over 150 senior management staff members of the parliament.

The National Assembly Service Commission on Wednesday announced the retirement of Sani-Omolori and others. The National Assembly clerk, however, dismissed that retirement as illegal.

Sani-Omolori had been due for retirement since February 2020, but for a controversial amendment to the Conditions of Service of the National Assembly by the 8th Assembly, which extended their services by five years.

The Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Dr Folasade Yemi-Esan, had declared the elongation illegal.

Sani-Omolori had, however, issued a statement shortly after to dismiss the retirement by the NASC.
