The Nigeria Labour Congress says it has completed plans to picket Turkish Airlines on Tuesday over alleged violation of workers’ rights.
The President of the NLC, Ayuba Wabba, in a letter addressed to the General Manager of the carrier titled ‘Notice of picketing’, said the airline sacked some of its trade unions leaders engaged in its service.
The letter read in part, “We write to officially inform you of the decision of the National Executive Council of the NLC to mobilise the Nigerian workforce to picket the operations and facilities of Turkish Airline owing to several and severe violations of workers and trade union rights.
“We and our affiliate unions in the aviation sector have written several letters to your management on the issue of violation of workers and trade union rights.
“These violations especially manifest in the sack of trade union leaders working in Turkish Airlines for demanding compliance with our labour laws that grant workers the right to join trade unions of their choice and participate in trade union activities.
“Your management had also rebuffed with utter disdain conciliatory efforts made by labour and even the supervising ministry.”
The labour then vowed to picket the airline on Tuesday (today), adding that the mass action would commence in Lagos and Abuja airport toll gates.
