National vehicle registration will curb insecurity, generate revenue’

The Federal Government has said the new National Vehicle Registry (VREG) will curb insecurity and generate revenue for the country.

Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, said this yesterday at a one-day zonal sensitisation seminar on the VREG at Grand Central Hotel in Kano.

“The Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget, and National Planning is saddled with the responsibility of managing the nation’s finances and revenue streams.

“In the midst of dwindling revenue, orchestrated by falling oil prices and mono-economy further worsened by revenue leakages from unplugged loopholes, such as Customs duty payment evasion, it became imperative that government be responsive to these issues.

“Consequently, in line with the Strategic Revenue Growth Initiative, the Finance Ministry conceived and launched the VREG automated gateway portal to leverage on technology infrastructure and maximise revenue generation for Nigeria as well as enhance national security, such as curtailing kidnapping, utilisation of vehicles in crime perpetration and terrorism,” she said.

She named Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), state revenue system, National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), Nigerian Police Force (NPF), Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Transportation Commissioners’ Forum as key stakeholders in the implementation and realisation of the VREG goal.
