The Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa has signed the bill banning open grazing in the state.
Okowa signed the bill today at the Governor office in Asaba, Delta State.
This follows the bill that was passed by the Delta State House of Assembly last week prohibiting open grazing, indiscriminate breeding, rearing, and marketing of livestock in Delta State.
Delta State is the most recent state to sign the bill after other states like, Rivers, Ondo, Akwa Ibom, and Lagos had done the same.
It is said that the bill was passed following a motion moved by the Majority Leader of the House, Ferguson Onwo.
The state government hopes that the farmers can now continue their businesses without the panic of terror herders attacking their crops.
The adoption of this law is said to stop the conflict that exists between farmers and herders.
Sherrif Oborevwori, Speaker of The House of Assembly, noted that the passing of the bill shows that the House of Assembly has settled to protect residents from clashes between herders and farmers.
“Through the passage of this bill, the State House of Assembly has demonstrated its resolve to protect Deltans (residents) from the menace of clashes between herders and farmers,” He said.
