The Elegushi of Ikate kingdom in Lagos State, Oba Saheed Elegushi, has described the passing of the Queen of England, Elizabeth II, as end of an era.
The traditional ruler commiserated with the British people as well as the UK Mission in Nigeria and everyone connected to the late Queen in a statement signed by the palace spokesman, Temitope Oyefeso, on Thursday.
The Oba added that late Queen Elizabeth would be fondly remembered for her service to her people and the entire human race.
“We are all saddened by the passing of Queen Elizabeth, despite her longevity. It is indeed the end of an era,” he said.
Oba Elegushi prayed for the repose of the soul of the departed Queen.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Elizabeth II of England died at Balmoral Castle in Scotland following health challenges on Thursday.
Buckingham Palace announced that the Queen died peacefully at Balmoral Castle.
Elizabeth ascended to the throne in 1952, following the death of her father, King George VI.
Elizabeth ruled over the United Kingdom and 14 other Commonwealth realms, and became one of the most recognisable women ever to have lived.
Her son, Charles, immediately becomes King upon her death.
Charles, as the queen’s eldest son, inherits the sovereign title and job as head of the Commonwealth, along with other assets such as land and property.
The Queen was born in Mayfair, London, on April 21, 1926.
She visited Nigeria to take part in the country’s independence celebration from Great Britain on Oct. 1, 1960.
