It was a promise kept by the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Limited on Thursday as the Nigeria’s leading gas company commissioned the new Occupational Therapy and Neuromodulation Rehabilitation Centre, which it built and equipped for Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), Kano, in Kano State.
With the commissioning, the facility has begun operation and prepared to render the requisite services to the general public.
The NLNG had on Monday commissioned an Obstetrics & Gynaecology Ward, which it also upgraded and equipped for the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Lagos. The LUTH project involved renovation and equipping of the 120-bed Obstetrics & Gynaecology Ward at Block C section of the hospital. The Block C was built about 60 years ago and has not undergone any major renovation since it was built. The upgrade include a four-storey building, provision of 120 beds to serve the prenatal and postnatal services, a waiting room, nurses stations, private wards, consulting rooms, radiation room, and doctors and nurses call rooms, among others.
The hospital projects which cost the Nigeria LNG multibillion naira are in fulfillment of its phase 1 Hospital Support Programme which will benefit Lagos, Kano, Bayelsa and Cross River States.
The phase 1 projects include Lagos University Teaching Hospital intervention, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital (NDUTH), Yenagoa; Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital intervention, and Neurosurgical and Stroke Centre at University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Calabar, Cross River State.
The phase 2 commenced in February 2023, with the signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), Port Harcourt, for the equipping of the Haemodialysis Centre; the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH), Uyo, for the renovation and equipping of an accident and emergency unit and theatre; and Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), Jos for the construction and equipping of a twin theatre suite
NLNG had in 2022 commissioned a maternity centre at University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH), Gwagwalada and a new Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).
According to NLNG’s management, the hospital support programme targets 12 hospitals in total from the six geographical zones in the country and it’s part of NLNG’s national Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative aimed at boosting healthcare delivery system in 12 Federal University Teaching Hospitals cutting across the six geopolitical zones in the country. The programme started in 2022.
Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, NLNG’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Philip Mshelbila, General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development, Andy Odeh, among others, were present at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano, for the commissioning.
