Former Minister of Power, Prof Barth Nnaji, has appealed to landlords in Aba, to assist the Aba Power Limited, deliver its promised responsibility to electric power users, by monitoring and ensuring that their households, tenants and neighborhood residents comply with laid down regulations while enjoying the facility.
He was worried that barely six months (September 2022 to February 2023) when the company took over electricity supply to Aba, consumers owed a whopping N5.2 billion, a situation that was not good and had resulted into load shedding instead of increase in supply.
Nnaji who is Chairman of Geometric Power, the parent company of Aba Power Limited (APL), spoke during a meeting between the APL management and Aba Landlords Protection and Development Association (ALPADA).
He said: “We came to partner with you on the issue of providing enduring electricity power supply to Aba.
“All over the world, electricity is man’s number one need. God gave a directive for light to come and it did.
“Power is used in all spheres of life, manufacturing, tailoring, etc., but it is in categories. Industrial power is the best and cheapest.”
He urged them to cooperate with APL to by paying their approved electricity bills, warning that if they refused, the company will find it difficult to sustain improved supply since power will be made available to it for distribution on payment.
“We came to plead with you to assist us by identifying electricity users that don’t pay their bills, and those that tap lights illegally in your neighborhood.
“We utilize 30 million cubic of gas daily and pay as much as $2.2 dollars, which is about N1.5 billion monthly and people (consumers) are not paying.
“That’s why we want to partner with you to get reliable power supply. Support and take our message to your people to stop illegal connection.”
Chief Operations Officer, Dennis Emeka Obi, in his remark, said power supply situation in the Aba Ring-fence area, comprising of nine Local Government Areas, of the State, will improve within the next three months, when the project would have been commissioned.
“So, we want you to reciprocate our gesture by monitoring the activities of your tenants and advising them appropriately,” he appealed.
President General of ALPADA, Chief Alphonsus Udeigbo, tasked the top management of Geometric/Aba Power, to caution their staff to always issue appropriate bills for energy consumed to customers and stop dishing out estimated bills, which he said was illegal and unacceptable to Aba energy users.
