Kano Assembly declares state of emergency on phone snatching, thuggery

The Kano State House of Assembly, on Monday declared a state of emergency on phone snatching, thuggery, and other criminal activities in the commercial city of Kano.
This followed an urgent motion of public importance, sponsored by the majority leader, Lawan Hussaini, representing Dala Constituency, during the plenary session presided over by the Speaker, Isma’il Falgore.
He expressed concern over the debasing conduct of some miscreants, who were engaged in thuggery, phone snatching, shoplifting, drug abuse, and other unlawful acts, capable of disrupting the peaceful atmosphere enjoyed within the metropolis.
Members of the Assembly, representing, Dawakin Tofa/Rimin Gado, Ungoggo, Dambatta, Garko, Takai and Kabo, in their separate contributions, also argued that, if not promptly addressed, the security situation will escalate to an unprecedented level, noting that gangs are already terrorising and injuring innocent Kano residents.
To this end, they stressed the need for the state security council, security agencies, and relevant stakeholders to holistically review and formulate modalities, toward addressing the menace.
At the end of careful deliberations, the House adopted the motion and charged the state government to do everything humanly to bring perpetrators of the heinous crimes to book.
The menace has become so bad that people are scared to make calls outside especially while walking by the road and public places in the evening. Some areas such as Sabon-Gari are deadlier than others.
Our correspondent who was in Kano recently was warned to be careful about how he makes calls outside of the hotel he lodged. He was told how people’s hands were cut off by these desperate pnone snatchers. Some unfortunate victims were even stabbed to death. A young doctor was said to have died from knife stabs for resisting to hand his phone to one of these phone snatchers.
