Lagos youths call for greater inclusion in governance

In a recent symposium organized by the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) in Lagos, youths called for increased inclusion in governance to leverage their creativity and drive socio-political and economic development in the state.

The event, themed “Youth In Governance: Building A Foundation For Sustainable Development,” culminated in a communique by NYCN Lagos chapter Chairman, Engr. Adigun Ibrahim.

Ibrahim emphasized the need for concerted efforts to achieve a 40% youth representation in the upcoming Local Government Areas (LGAs) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) elections.

He urged the council to spearhead campaigns, encouraging youths to register and obtain their Permanent Voters Cards (PVC).

Moreover, the communique called for the integration of People Living With Disabilities (PLWD) into governance, advocating for a significant quota in representation. Ibrahim also highlighted the necessity for establishing dedicated youth departments in each LGA and LCDA ahead of the upcoming elections.

He encouraged the NYCN to replicate the symposium across all 57 local branches in Lagos State to further enhance awareness regarding youth involvement in governance.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by Youth Commissioner Hon. Mobolaji Ogunlende praised the NYCN for its initiative, committing to ongoing efforts to foster youth inclusivity and human capacity development.

Deputy Speaker Hon. Mojisola Meranda acknowledged the importance of the symposium in bridging the gap between the government and young citizens, reaffirming the state assembly’s commitment to supporting policies beneficial to Lagos youth.

The event also featured a panel discussion with contributions from various leaders, including Hon. Rasaq Ajala, Hon. Temitope Adewale, and Comr. Abdulsalam Ashade, who shared insights on enhancing youth engagement for the socio-political advancement of both Lagos State and Nigeria.
